This is one of my most unusual sculptures. It is inspired by the structure of the shells of diatoms - tiny organisms floating in the ocean.

This is an innovative piece of generous scale. Light plays beautifully  on the surface as the sun moves around it. It is inspired by the texture of bees hives and also by the surface texture of objects that can be found floating in space.

Tunicates

12" tall, assemblage of two light beige beach pebbles with perforations similar to those of tunicates. The primitive looking tunicates belong to the phylum 'Chordata' and thus are closely related to vertebrates.

John Dori Fish

This prehistoric looking fish is occasionally found in the gulf of Maine. I was able to maintain some of the original weathered patina of the stone.

Sperm Whale

The sperm whale can dive deeper than a submarine. It is a predator of giant squid. The bulge of the head seems to play a role in echolocation. Sperm whales could be considered living submarines.

Fish Yin & Jang

a relief in dark granite, 14.5" x 11" x 1.5"

shiny flakes in the stone that resemble fish scales gave me the idea for this relief, which would look beautiful mounted onto a wooden door or hanging on a wall; this stone was extremely difficult to work.

To carve flowers into stone is a particular challenge. This is my first attempt on a larger scale, and I'm very happy with the result.

Botanical Shape: Spore of a Fern

pink granite boulder mounted on a small post (3-4' high), granite ball 10' x 8", 35 lbs.

The shape of this sculpture resembles a spore of a fern. It consists of a double helix. Once the spore matures the double helix pops open and forms two strap-like wings that help the spore to get carried away by the wind.
