This 5-ft.-flounder is meant to be installed in a gravel garden or lawn. The edges are shaped in a way that, after installation, it should be possible to mow over them with a lawn mower without chipping into the stone.

Steps of carving "The Last Sturgeon":

1.) drawing (I used approximately 20 different photos to come up with my layout and to see all the details I needed to understand - the fins, placement and shape of the bone plates, position of the mouth, etc.)

2.) rough cutting of shape with an angle grinder equipped with a 4" diamond blade

3.) rounding of shape with hammer and chisel; note the blocks of stone on the upper left and lower right that I left complete before I could decide what to do with these areas

4.) carving of further elements - in this case the boat and fishing line

5.) refinement of all surfaces, including clean-up of all edges to achieve contrast and high definition. Some of the surfaces receive final treatments with grinding stones and different grades of sand paper.

6.) the finished piece; the background has been worked with a tooth chisel to create a contrasting texture which would set off the smooth fish.
