Cobblestone Installation

The following pictures show in a few steps how cobblestone is installed. For technical details on the pattern of segmental arcs, see Thomas Berger's article in the NHLA Newsletter in May 1999.

ph-constr-cobbleinstall3.JPG (56176 bytes) Granite cobblestone (cubes 4"by 4" by 4") is installed in a special aggregate blend. The pattern is called "segmental arcs". The width of the arcs is calculated according to the needs of the design and the size of the cobblestone. To insure an equal pattern over the entire work area a template is manufactured according to the calculated data.

To achieve a tight pavement, cobblestones for edges and corners have to be split to the right size.

The freshly installed pavement will be compacted. Interlocking of the cobblestone pavement makes it almost impossible to remove a single stone, even if no concrete has been used.

The segmental arc pattern is supposed to be the most durable cobblestone pavement.

This cobblestone walkway has geen finished off with granite posts and plantings. A clipped boxwood hedge has been planted in the line of the posts and step.
