Description of the Business

Green Art in Pictures

Green Art was started in 1995 by Thomas Berger as a business for landscape design and construction.

In 1999 a property was purchased to establish a nursery and to provide space for trucks, equipment and materials. A small greenhouse was set up in 2000 and with that the nursery activity began.

When the nursery opened much of the land was still bare. The property was in bad shape and is continually improved. It now has one entrance from Route 1 Bypass and a secondary entrance from Old Post Road.

In 2002 we were setting up a beautiful barn like building with a well equipped workshop for stone sculpting, a sales room for the nursery, and a spacious design office and storage room upstairs.

In the nursery, we offered a large selection of perennials, shrubs and dwarf conifers, as well as a basic selection of ornamental trees, fruit trees and some shade trees.

We were very lucky to find highly competent gardeners and designers who were able to give professional advice to our customers.

The nursery was soon also used to keep some serious pets.

Maggie can be a bit grumpy, but we love her anyway. She recently moved into the small pond garden, where she has a den and an attached mini-greenhouse that keeps her dry and warm in the winter.

Meanwhile, many parts of the property have started to shape up nicely with shrub borders and perennial gardens.

The parking area is shaded by a number of honey locusts and birches. The entire length of the fence is screened from the road with a mix of flowering shrubs, hollies, yews and perennials.

Small ponds have been build and some specialty gardens such as a miniature landscape.

In the winter 2005/2006 we enlarged our retail space by purchasing a neighbor property - a beautiful piece of woodland with old oak and beech trees and some ledge outcroppings.

A new workshop is being added in 2006. The old stone workshop is being remodeled into a utility room.

In the winter, I focus on my art work and stone sculpting.

Summer of 2008:

Good Bye, Nursery!

Due to marginal profitability we closed the nursery down after 7 years in business. It was a lot of fun, but I needed to focus on my landscape design and stone work.

The building is ever growing: addition of 2008 on top of the workshop which had a flat roof.

The former nursery land is being transformed into a landscaping display and sculpture garden.
