Rustic Granite Steps and Walkways

Left: before, right: after construction. In this project, steps have been placed in a steep slope to create a connection between garage and entrance above. A wall has been added to retain the slope below the entrance. Very few changes were done to the plants.

large and heavy granite slabs have been used for an entrance area of a house on the ocean. Some of the larger joints were later planted with a compact variety of creeping thyme (Thymus coccineus 'Minus')

To give the entrance patio an interesting appeal heavy rock boulders have been placed and then a rustic granite patio was installed among the boulders. A simple stone bench has also been installed. Great effort was put into the proper placement of the rock boulders to achieve a natural balance. One boulder was set in a way as to connect to the building.

The left wall and lower part of the steps were old construction and left in place. The picture was taken before planting. The planting scheme included several varieties of dwarf conifers and rhododenrons, as well as small flowering shrubs and a number of perennials and grasses. Photos will be added soon.
