Design Gallery # 11 |
Following a project |
This is an example of how a landscape project is designed and realized.
A rectangular space at the entrance of an office building is to be landscaped. A fountain among rock boulders and a Paperbark Maple are proposed in a design. Similar sized trees would be planted along the right side of the building for continuity, as seen in the below sketch. |
To help integrate the design into the surroundings and to loosen up the square shape of the area, it is proposed to set some rock boulders partly into the walkway area by cutting out of the concrete walkway the exact shapes of the respective parts of the boulders. |

| Unfortunately, tall plants were not allowed at this location
and therefore the Paperbark Maple rejected - which made the design a
challenge. Cutting into the existing walkway to fit in rock boulders was
also rejected, so that the design had to be simplified and redone.
A few little shrubs and perennials alone would not be able to stand on their own against the commercial building with its wide brick walls. To balance this out, more stone had been added and the boulders used around the fountain would have to be sufficiently voluminous. |

The first boulders are placed after some of the low qualtity fill had been removed.

The pump for the fountain is installed in the underground catch basin.

The stonework has been completed and the fountain is running. The soil has been exchanged and conditioned to the needs of the plant to come. |
| With good care and watering, all plants have grown in nicely after a few weeks. | ![]() |

One year later, the little garden is already fully developed and is filled with flowers from spring to fall. The fountain splashes refreshingly among the rocks. The boulders and stone wall, a few evergreens and the foliage of the grasses make this little garden still look appealing even in the midst of winter. |
