Rock Gardens and Boulders

A stone lantern is the vocal point of this oriental garden. It is surrounded by gardens containing a Japanese Maple (Acer plamatum dissectum atropurpureum), Japanese Wood Grass (Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'), Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca 'Conica'), Hosta 'Leather Sheen'), Irish Moss (Sagina subulata 'Aurea'), Wooly Thyme (Thymus pseudolanuginosus) etc. The central area of the garden consists of raked gravel and a natural stone bowl serving as a bird bath.

This herb garden at the edge of a woodland was designed in a circular form. The edges are defined with rock boulders and a section on fence that consists of branches tied together with rope. The entrance into the small garden is marked by a stone step, boulders and dwarf boxwoods. A stone trough is placed at the foot of an old oak tree. The garden is shown right after planting and will develop over the next years.

Very heavy and rustic granite steps make this slope accessible and transform it into a vocal point. The area around the steps and the ledge is planted as a rock garden in half shade.
In this garden, rock boulders had been surrounded with low creeping evergreens (Junipers, Bearberry and Wintergreen) and some contrasting grasses and the purple-leaved dwarf Weigela 'Midnight Wine'. Photo taken after planting. The garden will need a little while (ca. 2 seasons) to really be satisfying, but it will be worth the patience. Once filled in, it will require very little maintenance.
