Entrance Areas and Walkways

Brick

Brick is our preferred material for urban landscapes. It is suitable for walkways and residential driveways and has a great texture and warmth to it. We love to combine brick with granite - a contrast of striking beauty and great technical efficiency as well.

To give the entrance walkway a natural flow, some large natural rock boulders were placed in a way that the walkway had to slightly curve around them. The granite edging contrasts in color with the brick and helps the definition of the walkway. (Photo: Lee Knoch)

To complement the arch over the entrance door, the walkway has been designed with a half-circular landing. This also brings some formality into the naturally winding walkway, appropriate to the architecture of this charming residence. (Photo: Lee Knoch)

This driveway was edged with curbstone that was installed lying flat on the sides. The purpose of this edging was to protect the brick work from building activities on the neighbor properties and on the public walkway, which was in fact reworked after this construction was finished. The edging also echoes the lines of the trim on the house and garage.

This detail shows the herringbone brick layout, an upright curbstone edging along the garden bed, and the flat curbstone along the public walkway.

A straight walkway was edged with granite curbstone. The slight reveal of the edging increases the definition.

This brick walk curves around an older tree. Wide granite steps lead up from the street. The front of the walkway is in fact wider than the part after the curve. This gives an illusion of perspective and makes the walk appear longer than it actually is.
